Value of the invisible archives for society

For the third edition of the #InvisibleArchives of the Manifesta Biennal, Moroccan artist Mohamed Fariji (b. 1966, MA) is collaborating with our cooperative of inhabitants from the northern districts of Marseille Hôtel du Nord.

Involved in the exploration of urban myths and collective memory, Mohamed Fariji, develops participatory artistic projects over a long period of time. After a three-week residency hosted by Hôtel du Nord, the artist will present his collaboration and work on the collective’s archives at Tiers QG, for Invisible Archive # 3. This collaboration happens during upcoming local elections and reflects upon “Oh Bonne Maire”, the political story project of Christine Breton, heritage curator and retired Professor of History.

#InvisibleArchives represent selected genealogies and non-institutional memories of various civil initiatives, histories of resilience and community synergies originated and located in particular areas of Marseille. Challenging the city’s “mainstream” discourses, these genealogies re-narrated by an invited artist or a collective, inhabit the space of Tiers QG in a year-long sequence of  exhibitions and public programmes. Selected archives are used as departure points for artists and exhibitions. The public programme takes place in the ecosystem of Marseille, as well as in relation to foreign initiatives and practices.

Hôtel du Nord invite four initiatives from the european Faro convention network to share their experiences about #InvisibleArchives: Patrimoni in Psain, Cabbage Field in Lituania, Almašani in Serbia and Machkhaani en Gorgia.

The Faro convention of the Council of Europe on the value of cultural heritage for society is about people, places and stories and to make invisible visible (Faro moto). The Faro convention network members try to implement human rights, rules of law and democracy in sometimes difficult circumstances (clientelism, corruption, rural emigration, gentrification, speculation). To manage these situations, in addition to judicial procedures, manifestations and petitions, they choose to use heritage and archives. What is the value of invisible archives for the society? For heritage communities, education, quality of life, social dialogue, regeneration of communities? They will share their experiences during an Aogora on Saturday 22th of Febbruary from 2 pm to 5 pm a the Tiers QG.

From a few geographical and thought paths of Walter Benjamin in Marseille, there are situations conducive to the emergence of other narratives of a common history. Showcased by Christine Breton with Julie de molt and Jean Cristofol, Scénograpie Theo Paolo Goedert and Milena Walter.    Out of the window on Sunday 30 September follow Walter Benjamin [stroll] by Christine Breton and the association Les Labourdettes. A balancing performance exploring the emotion felt by the people of the North who discover the physics of Marseille, live in the animation of our streets and places. A group with slippery posture on the quay of the Belgians and the bottom of the Canebière, pretending not to look at our faces and our postures, hiding behind the pretext of the evocations of those who described our little people. Free on registration on departure at 152 la Canebière/arrival at the Marseille History Museum on the edge of the window on Sunday, October 7 "Geography of the Unseen, from Walter Benjamin to Trevor paraglen" [Mini Sidewalk Conference #1] by Jean Cristofol, philosopher and teacher at the School of Art of Aix en Provence. Walter Benjamin's text the author as producer (1934) has constantly echoed and referenced in the artistic field. Today, it is still an active force that allows us to think about the reconfiguration of practices which, between art, science and activism, renew the forms of experimentation and intervention in the social field.   «Yellow tooth of sea-wolf jaws open… [Mini-Sidewalk Conference #2] Anna Gjuillo, artist and teacher at the University of Aix-Marseille. Benjamin develops the complex, trendy notion of a work that can only be politically correct if it is literaryly just. The question is how to make commitment and quality coincide by insisting in particular on the technique of the author. It is Walter Benjamin writer who will be summoned in this reading-performance from his text titled Marseille that it is to propose to the street, as to better experience and put into practice the theories of its author. Free admission on Saturday 13 October the city-port, lifted from the Rue de Lyon with Walter Benjamin [stroll] 9.30 am to 12.30 am lifted from the rue de Lyon with Jean Cristofol, Christine Breton and Julie de molt, sequenced by interventions in TR Ois bars de la rue de Lyon-aux dung, Saint-Louis, La Viste-which will hang the possible encounters imagined between W. Spring Heritage Stroll #11: Mythical meetings in Varma 1 # 2, Sunday June 17.

You will follow the steps of Nathalie Cazals, an archaeologist, who has long been fascinated by the oppidum of Varma, a former Gaulish village, Celtic is now said. From the heights of Varma opens another point of view because of its exceptional geographical location. On the city first, because it draws here an urban cartography where flows and networks cross a mosaic of village hamlets and large ensembles. On the founding myth of Marseille then, because its history of love and reconciliation of peoples has many reasons to be and is interpreted otherwise from the Celtic world in front of the centrality of Massalia the Greek. An ancient narrative that resonates until today to discuss with the inhabitants the relationship between Centralities and Peripheries, to discuss also the future of the archaeological site that will be rehabilitated this year. Proposal in the context of National days Archaeology 2018 programming spring 2018. ATTENTION NB: For reasons of number of PLACES on isced two programming of this same stroll are offered in the same morning.: From 9:30 and from 11:00 to 12:30 hourly Listings # 1 here. Hourly Listings # 2 here.

Spring Heritage Stroll #10: The route of the Celts: from the Gallie to the oppidum of the Bell, Saturday 16 June.

The oppidum of the bell is located on a road connecting Marseille with the lake of Leo. Destroyed by the Roman troops in 49 BCE, excavated and then classified historical Monument in 2004, it tells the Celtic-Ligurian past but also the circulations in a metropolitan territory practiced by men for thousands of years. Walking in the steps of the Celts, we will meet along the way the stories of the many inhabitants of the massif of the Nerthe:

  • Those who still live in the very discreet hamlet of the Gallie and its chapel
  • Those whose traces we find in the ancient domains Cossimont, Turkish or in the multiple military fortifications
  • Those who came with the industrialization of the massif, but also the many "non-humans" who participate in the richness of these hills (plant species, birds, amphibians…)

Picnic from the bag at the end of the trip. In the framework: National days Archaeology 2018 programming Spring 2018 registrations here.

Course danced in the PORT of SAUMATY-Fridays June 1st and 22nd

For 2 years already the neighbors walkers of North Hotel offer you to discover the Port of Saumaty from its various uses related to the sea and fishing. But this conversation has also since the first meetings included strange artistic experiences where the possibility to exchange on another register, more uncertain but also sometimes more open. This year, the net is woven from the dance side, with the Ex Nihilo company.

"By mutual agreement" is a proposal for a dance course at the Port of Saumaty.

The Ex Nihilo Company invites you to discover the port, its activities, its rhythm, to walk through the fishing boxes, the Ice tower, the hall at Tide, and the workshops of wholesalers… An invitation to share their experience, their encounter with this place so singular, responsible for its history and that of the fishermen.

The fishing port of Marseille which has since 1976 the wholesale market and the auction is in full restructuring. This emblematic place motivated the desire of the Ex Nihilo company to take the time of a voyage, an experimentation in situ during two residences that gave rise to this proposal.

Spring Heritage Stroll #8: Saumaty, Port side, Saturday, June 2.

Not really a neighborhood, Saumaty is both the name of a cove, a tower, a port, a tile factory, an activity area… Remodelled, the earth became embankments nibbled the sea until it became in 1976 the last extension of the great port of Marseille to include the fishing port and the auction, then located on the old port. of unpredictable access, the fishing port of Saumaty remains a somewhat mysterious place, a little hidden, unknown in its function and its trades. It is also a huge reservoir of stories, know-how and knowledge about the Mediterranean. Just pass the barrier and meet… A stroll punctuated by the artistic interventions of the collective of musicians Bo Monsters, the singer Julie Biereye and the visual artist Emilie Petit. Registration here.

Spring Heritage Stroll #7: In hospitable lands, Tuesday, May 15.

The North hospital celebrated in 2015 its 50 years. It was an opportunity to discover its history, its landscapes, its site, its culture. 3 years later the links between the hospital and the residents of the cooperative were woven: reception of patients and caregivers in the house, small market of local resources, map of resources… This stroll was born out of a shared will between residents and hospital agents to get to know each other and share the stories of the place. It is an unusual discovery of a public establishment but also of a human adventure, which tells a lot about the urbanization of the 50 years of the terroir of Marseille. The tour will integrate the discovery of the initiative of the small market (possibility to find what to picnic). Registration here.
